Pipe Major Iain McLeod’s Selection - Five Times Champions of The World
The Edinburgh City Police Pipe Band was one of the most universally recognised and successful pipe bands of all time. In its 130-year history it won virtually every competition award and accolade available.
The Band was known and highly respected worldwide for its success, but also in its ambassadorial role for the City of Edinburgh, for Scotland and for Great Britain, performing at major events throughout the UK and Europe, Canada and USA, Japan, South Africa and Russia - the latter trip in 1966, at the height of the Cold War period, to promote British trade and industry.
The Band’s film appearances included Casino Royale, Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, Battle Of The Sexes and Let’s Be Happy, featuring stars such as Peter Sellers, David Niven, Orson Welles, Deborah Kerr, James Mason and Vera Ellen. During the renowned Edinburgh International Festival, the Band’s daily parade along the city’s Princes Street was a huge spectacle, attracting locals and tourists alike.
Pipe Major Iain McLeod led the Band from 1959 until his retirement from the Police in 1978. During that period it won the Grade 1 World Pipe Band Championship on five occasions - four times as Edinburgh City Police Pipe Band and once as Lothian and Borders Police Pipe Band (after police restructuring). For Iain, the Band’s win at the first Intercontinental Pipe Band Championship in Toronto, Canada in 1972 - competing for the first time against the top North American bands - was the ‘icing on the cake’ after winning the World Championship in Scotland the same year.
The album represents Pipe Major Iain McLeod’s personal selection of tracks from the Band’s five albums under his leadership (four on EMI Waverley and one on Fontana). It illustrates that the quality of the Band’s performances has stood the test of time over more than half a century, despite considerable advances in recording equipment and instrument technology.
The album is intended as a personal tribute from Iain to everyone with the Band in its glory years - to the many highly proficient pipers and drummers who contributed to the great success and the reputation of the Band under Iain’s leadership; to the much loved ‘characters’ who made their mark in the piping world to become legends in their own right; to Drum Major Bob Montgomery, who led the drum corps through most of its successes; and to the piping public, at home and abroad, who have taken the Band to its heart over the years.
We are grateful Peter Haigh who did an amazing job in remastering the tracks to a very high standard. The excellent sleeve design is by John Slavin of Designfolk. Greentrax is grateful to Warner Music for licensing the tracks for this album.
